About Freire Schools
Established in 1999, Freire Schools (www.freireschools.org) is a network of four charter schools across Philadelphia and Delaware whose mission is to prepare students from historically underserved communities for success in college and beyond. About the team
For this Responsive Literacy Teacher position, you’ll be working at Freire Charter High School in Center City, Philadelphia. Freire Charter High School (9–12): 2027 Chestnut St, Philadelphia, PA 19103
What you’ll do
As the Responsive Literacy teacher, you will provide targeted reading instruction using the Corrective Reading scripted curriculum to full sections of 9th grade. This course is grounded in the science of reading and focuses on accelerating foundational skills and comprehension so students can access grade-level content.
Responsibilities
- Implement the Corrective Reading curriculum with fidelity to deliver explicit instruction in decoding, fluency, and comprehension to 4 sections of 9th grade. This is not a position working with students in small groups of 1-1 settings.
- Monitor student progress using data and adjust instruction to ensure measurable growth.
- Maintain a structured, supportive classroom with high expectations for all learners.
- Collaborate with special education staff, literacy specialists, and content teachers to align supports.
- Communicate regularly with families about student progress.
- Participate in professional development and team collaboration.
- Teachers may also serve as CREW Leaders, co-leading a small group focused on SEL and community building twice per week.

Minimum requirements
- Bachelor’s degree required
- Valid state teaching certification or commitment to obtain
- Strong instructional skill and content knowledge
- Experience supporting students through co-teaching, accommodations, and targeted interventions
- Positive, collaborative, solution-oriented mindset
- At least two years of experience working with diverse student populations
Pay and benefits
Salaries for certified teachers entering their first year start at $60,000, with an overall salary range of $50,000–$85,000 based on experience and qualifications. Freire Schools offers a competitive compensation package, comprehensive benefits including health, dental, and vision coverage, a 403(b) retirement plan with a 5% employer contribution for Pennsylvania employees, and a strong commitment to developing all staff as professionals while working with exceptional students in Philadelphia.
